Types
Classes, also known as Jobs and Types are one of the most important gameplay mechanics in PSU. A Class essentially defines most of the abilities of your character, as well as the Weapons (s)he can use. PSU retains the three Classes from its predecessor, Phantasy Star Online. They are:
- Hunters - the melee specialists of the game. They are the damage-dealers, who can take as much as they deal out. With their Photon Arts known as Skills, they can execute powerful melee attacks.
- Rangers - the ranged specialists of the game. They can use their passive Photon Arts - Bullets - in order to cripple enemies with Status Effects such as Burn and Freeze. They are also the most accurate Class in the game.
- Forces - the archetypical mage. Forces use their Photon Arts, Techniques to acheive a variety of effects; including but not limited to elemental damage, healing, and raising and lowering Stats.
PSU also adds the Expert Class mechanic, although details on how this will work are scarce. It will, apparently, allow you to gain abilities from more than one Class, however.
Photon Art Limits
Each Class has certain limits on how much they can level their Photon Arts (for more information see Photon Arts), these are described below.
Hunter | Ranger | Force | |
---|---|---|---|
Skills | 20 | 10 | 1 |
Bullets | 10 | 20 | 10 |
Techniques | n/a | n/a | 20 |
Changing Classes
You can change your current Class to any of the classes available at the Type Select Counter. Doing so will cost you a certain amount of Meseta.
When you change your Class, you do not get the benefits of your old Class in your new one. You cannot switch from Force to Hunter and use Techniques, for example. Nor do any stat bonuses from your old Class as a result of leveling the Class (see below) carry over to your new one. However if you switch to a different Class, and then switch back again, your old Character Level and abilities will still be there.
Class Levels
Upon completing a Mission, you will get a reward of Meseta and Points ('class experience') for the Class you were using in that Mission. Like with your Character Level, once you receive enough Class Experience your class will level up. The benefits this brings are twofold:
- Firstly, your stats will increase, particularly those that are important for your Class. Hunters, for example, will get more HP and ATP than the other classes.
- Secondly, when reaching certain Class Levels you may 'Rank Up' - that is to say, your proficiency with certain weapon types will increase, allowing you to use more powerful weapons. For example, you may level up your Hunter Class and upon reaching a certain Class Level for Hunters, your proficiency with Sabers may rise from C to B, allowing you to use B-Rank Sabers.
The maximum Class Level for any one Class is 20. Class Levels exist completely independently of your Character Level.
