Game play wise, Phantasy Star Universe plays very much like its predecessor Phantasy Star Online.

Combat

Physical combat features three basic commands for encounters.

These are:

  • Simple Attack - This is the fastest attack, and does little damage. Its effect depends on what weapon you are using; for example, if you were using a handgun, this would quickly fire off a shot doing little damage.
  • Hard Attack - These, while looking exactly the same as simple attacks, are slower (they have a charge time before swinging/shooting) but much more powerful.
  • Special Attack - The availability of this depends on if your weapon has a special attack on it. These normally have the same animation as simple / hard attacks but instead have an Attribute (i.e. fire) associated with them.

With timing you can use the three variations of attack to perform what is known as a Combo. The advantages to performing combos is chaining the attacks in rapid succession, which not only increases the accuracy rating of a following hit, but has different variances/angles to most follow-up swings. For example: Hard -> Special -> Special would have a lower chance of connecting than Simple -> Hard -> Special.

Techniques

Techniques are in essence Phantasy Star Universe’s ‘magic’. Each Technique has an associated Element and comes in a variety of uses. Among them are ‘Nukes’ such as Foie (Fire attribute Attack), Barta (Ice attribute attack) and etc. However, unlike physical attacks they cannot be chained and they cannot strike critical hits.

Online

When you login, you will be transported into a lobby area where other online players gather. Here you can chat, meet friends and organize games.
