Prologue

GRM is the only enterprise in the Gurhal System allowed to manufacture CASTs. Soon after Ethan Waber led an assault on the HIVE, back when few had ever heard of the Illuminus... GRM was busy developing a next-generation, all-purpose CAST model. It was endowed with communication abilities that far surpassed those of other CAST models. The standard education curriculum, however, proved inadequate in helping it to reach its full potential. As a result, GRM sought assistance from the GUARDIANS in order to provide a more practical and thorough education program. This story takes place soon after [Player] graduated from the training school, before meeting instructor Laia Martinez.

Holtes Standby Area

([Player] walks in. Meets Charly Arl.)

  • Charly Arl: Ah, it's nice to meet you. My name is Charly Arl, and I'm the head of this project. You're [Player], is that correct? You came highly recommended by the GUARDIANS, despite having only recently graduated from training school. Thank you for accepting my commission. Well, allow me to cut to the chase and explain the mission. My project to develop the next-generation CAST has been a success. This CAST has specs that far out match any previous model. Most notable is its high level of communication ability, something other current CAST models lack. However, after completing its basic education curriculum, those abilities have not yet developed. Now we hope to develop those abilities by repeatedly completing practical combat training with the GUARDIANS. Oh, you haven't met Vivienne yet, have you? Vivienne, please come here.

([Player] and Charly Arl turn left to see Vivienne seated at a table. Vivienne approaches.)

  • Vivienne: Greatings. I am Vivienne.
  • Charly Arl: Vivienne is the prototype of GRM's next-generation CAST. [Player], we would like you to accompany her on a combat training simulation, in the hopes that you can help her learn to comminicate in a proper manner. However, there is no need for you to teach her how to talk. Rather, please just converse with her as you would anyone else. By doing so, eventually her communication abilities should be able to develop on their own. The more she opens up, the better. Think of her like a newborn baby. Everything is new to her right now. During training, when she asks you a question, answer accordingly. By conversing with you, her communication abilities should gradually develop. Oh, and please do not mislead or misinform her.
  • Vivienne: ...
  • Charly Arl: Now, about the combat training simulator, the GCS... It was developed for the Alliance Military, with the goal of increasing soldiers' combat skills, but as its difficulty was rather high, the GCS was shelved. But to get back to my story... There wasn't time in our schedule to develop a new program. Though it might not be as big a problem for a top GUARDIANS rookie such as yourself, for someone like Vivienne, with no combat experience, it would be a hopeless endeavor. Well, the important thing now is to build up her communication abilities, so her combat training is of lesser importance. However... Please note that compensation will be based on your simulation score.
  • [Mission Briefing]
    • This is a single-player, high-difficulty mission. Your goal is to clear all four stages.
    • If the party leader is incapacitated, the trial is over and your score will be calculated. If Vivienne is incapacitated, there will be no effect on the trial score.
    • Answer her questions, and by replaying the mission multiple times, her communication skills will develop.
  • Charly Arl: Good luck in your mission.
  • Vivienne: Yes
