Introduction

In a far away galaxy, lies a sun, orbited by 3 planets. The Gurhal system.
A place inhabited by humans, and their creations,
CASTs, Newmens, and beasts.
For 500 years, there was war among the races,
a seemingly never-ending conflict. Then finally...
An era of peace and prosperity that has lasted for 100 years.
But now, a darkness has awoken, and threatens the Universe.

(Opening Cinema)

Episode 1 Chapter 5: The Divine Maiden

(Cutscene) (Ethan and Headmaster Nav square off against each other in a Dojo styled training room. The pair spar with each other in a scene very reminiscent to the Matrix where Orpheus taught Neo kung-fu. Headmaster Nav easily deflects Ethan's attacks with one hand. It's clear that while Ethan's skill is improving dramatically but he still has much to learn. There is no dialogue in this scene) (End Cutscene)

Ethan's Room

(Cutscene) (Ethan falls from his bed to the floor, wincing in pain at the soreness in his muscles after long hours of training)

• Ethan: Graaaaah! Owowowow.

(Ethan's vision phone beeps and an image of Hyuga appears as the call connects)

• Hyuga: Ethan, you awake?
• Ethan: Yeah...
• Hyuga: Karen needs us. She just called. It looks like we finally get to check out Neudaiz!

(Ethan gets up off the floor and walks over to the vision phone)

• Ethan: Huh... Wonder what's up now?
• Hyuga: We get to protect the Maiden! Oh, I am so excited! I can't believe it! This is the best day of my entire life!
• Ethan: Happy, are we?
• Hyuga: I'm heading off to headquarters early. Don't be late, okay!

(Ethan waves to Hyuga and then yawns, stretching his arms above his head - then wincing in pain)

• Ethan: Owowowow.

(End Cutscene)

(Talk to Pete)

• Pete: So you wish to know about Neudaiz?
• Ethan: Yeah, what kind of a place is it?
• Pete: I will teach you all that is in my data banks. Is there something you'd like to hear about?

(Ask about Tylor family)

• Pete: The Tylor family are the rogues responsible for the attack on the Milate 04. They are very well-known among their kind. It's highly likely that they were after the A-Photon reactors recently excavated. There has yet to be an A-Photon reactor of that size created at any research facility. One would imagine that it is an item that countless entities would be interested in purchasing.

(Ask about Neudaiz)

• Pete: Neudaiz is the second planet in the Gurhal System. The majority of the population is comprised of newmans. Nearly 80% of the planet's surface is water and the people of Neudaiz live in harmony with nature. Neudaiz is a religious state governed by the Communion of Gurhal, it's national religion is the Gurhal Faith. There are approximately 500 million newmans on Neudaiz, with another 10 million scattered throughout the system.

(Ask about newmans)

• Pete: Newmans were originally a human attempt to create a superior breed of human. Many newmans are very affable in nature. However, others are considered to be elitist. So they are often thought of as having two separate sides to them. Newmans are often considered to be far more sensitive than humans and other races. They also may have a tendency to avoid unnecessary contact with strangers.

(Ask about the Gurhal Faith)

• Pete: The Gurhal Faith is the most widely adopted religion in the system. It's major belief is that the elementary particle "photon" or "Holy Light" is the source of all things and all events we experience. It is taught that the "Holy Light" guides us in our everyday lives.

(Ask again later)

• Pete: Hyuga is waiting for you at GUARDIANS Headquarters. Please hurry up and meet him.

Clyez City: GUARDIANS Headquarters: Fifth Floor

(Lou)

• Lou: I hear you were beaten by Tylor.
• Ethan: Ah, yeah... I'm no match for him.
• Lou: That's an uncharacteristically negative attitude.
• Ethan: Huh? Are you trying to make me feel better?
• Lou: Don't be ridiculous.

(Again)

• Lou: Simply learning that there are others better than oneself is an important step to self-advancement.
• Ethan: (That's a big help!)

(Mina)

• Mina: Ah, Mr. Waber. Hello!
• Ethan: Hello, Mina.
• Mina: Hyuga and Karen are waiting for you in the meeting room.
• Ethan: Thank you.

(After Mission Briefing)

• Mina: You need departure permission for a voyage to Neudaiz, correct? Wait just a moment, please... All right, here you are. Your license is renewed and your all set to go!

(Receive departure clearance for Neudaiz)

• Ethan: Thank you.
• Mina: No problem! So... Neudaiz!
• Ethan: Yeah.
• Mina: Good luck protecting the Divine Maiden! Are you nervous?
• Ethan: Not really. But Hyuga might explode if he doesn't calm down!
• Mina: Hehe!
• Ethan: See ya!
• Mina: May the Holy Light guide you!

(Again)

• Mina: Good luck escorting the Divine Maiden! May the Holy Light guide you!

Meeting Room

(Cutscene) (Headmaster Nav turns to face Hyuga, Karen, and Ethan)

• Nav: I've received instructions for your next assignment.
• Hyuga: We're going to protect the Maiden, right?
• Nav: That is correct. It'll be our job to escort the Maiden to her shuttle from the Communion grounds on Neudaiz. If I remember correctly, Hyuga, you're a member of the Gurhal Communion?
• Hyuga: Yes sir! I am honored to be able to help the Divine Maiden... in whatever way I can.
• Nav: Good. That's the right spirit.
• Ethan: But Neudaiz has it's own defense force. What do they need us for?
• Karen: The Communion has been receiving anonymous letters... the contents of which hint at a assassination attempt on the Maiden's life.
• Hyuga: Assassination?
• Nav: The Gurhal Communion does not wish for any of this to be publicly known. That is the reason why they have hired us, instead of using their own forces. We will be deploying a full force of 200 Guardians.
• Ethan: Two hundred?! Are you serious?
• Hyuga: But Headmaster, I don't understand. I thought we were going to be the Maiden's bodyguards?
• Nav: Sorry, but your job is to man the parade route... and keep an eye out for anyone suspicious.
• Ethan: You can't win 'em all, buddy! You actually thought they'd give an important task like that to us? Ha.
• Nav: All assignments are of equal importance, Mr. Waber! It is the spirit that you bring to each task that makes the difference!
• Ethan: Yes sir...
• Karen: Yes, let's go. I'll brief you once we're on site.
• Ethan & Hyuga: Yes, ma'am!

(End Cutscene)

(Scene: Ethan, Hyuga, Karen, Nav)

• Nav: Go and renew your licenses at the counter. You'll receive permission to travel to Neudaiz.
• Ethan: Won't you be going, too, Headmaster?
• Nav: This time I will not be accompanying you. Remember to keep a level head out there!
• Ethan: Yes sir!
• Hyuga: Yes sir!
• Nav: Well then, dismissed!

(End Scene)

Clyez City: PPT Spaceport: Fourth Floor

(Scene: Ethan, Lumia) (Lumia is waiting for Ethan as he exits the GUARDIANS Headquarters)

• Ethan: Lumia, I'm finally going to Neudaiz!
• Lumia: Wow, that's great! Bring me back a souvenir!
• Ethan: Is that all you think about? Material items?
• Karen: Ethan, are you still not ready?

(Karen enters the scene)

• Lumia: Ethan, who is that? Is that... your girlfriend?
• Ethan: No way, you dork! This is my instructor. Karen Erra.
• Lumia: Really? Your instructor? Cool! Pleased to meet you, Ms. Erra. Thank you for looking after Ethan!
• Karen: It's nice to meet you, too.
• Lumia: Hm..
• Ethan: What's up, Lumia?
• Lumia: It's just that... Karen, has anyone ever told you that you look exactly like the Divine Maiden? I'm such a big fan!

(Karen appears distressed)

• Karen: Oh... I'm sorry, you'll have to excuse me. It was nice to meet you, Lumia.
• Lumia: Sure thing.

(Karen exits)

• Ethan: Hey, Karen!
• Lumia: Did I say something to upset her?
• Ethan: Don't worry about it, she probably just had to go to the bathroom or something.

(End Scene)

(Lumia)

• Lumia: Was it something I said?

(Scene: Ethan, Karen) (Ethan approaches Karen who is waiting by the PPT gate to Neudaiz)

• Ethan: Karen, are you all right? You left so quickly!
• Karen: Sorry... I just had a... disturbing thought.
• Ethan: Karen, just ignore my sister. She's got the Maiden on the brain all the time!
• Karen: Thanks... but it's not that. It's just that whenever I see the Divine Maiden, I get this really uneasy feeling.
• Ethan: That's weird.
• Karen: Actually, even on Neudaiz...
• Ethan: Huh? What about Neudaiz?
• Karen: Nothing, never mind. Come on now, go get ready!

(End Scene)

Holtes City: GUARDIANS Branch

(Sheena)

• Sheena: Welcoming to the GUARDIANS, making the futures for Gurhal! We have no missions here now that you can accept.

Ohtoku City:

(Scene: Ethan, Hyuga, Karen) (Ethan excitedly runs from the PPT Spaceport out into Ohtoku City. Hyuga and Karen meet him)

• Ethan: Wow! So this is Neudaiz! This is nothing like the G-Colony or Parum!
• Hyuga: Ethan, have you just arrived?
• Ethan: Yeah. Isn't this place amazing?
• Hyuga: On Neudaiz, you can clearly see the influence of the newman culture.
• Ethan: What is that mountain?
• Hyuga: Oh, that! That's Mt. Ohtoku. It has been widely adopted as the symbol of the Communion of Gurhal. The water from this lake, by some strange force, rushes UP the mountain.
• Ethan: That mountain... it's made of water!?
• Hyuga: The headquarters of the Gurhal Faith rests atop the summit of Mt. Ohtoku. The Divine Maiden and Representative Rutsu, Chief of the Holy Light, reside there.
• Ethan: Wow...
• Karen: That's enough sightseeing. You two haven't forgotten what we're doing here, have you?
• Ethan: Protecting the Divine Maiden during the parade, of course!
• Karen: That is correct. There's a high probability that the assassin is already here somewhere. Until the parade starts, we should patrol this area and look for anyone suspicious.
• Ethan: Understood!

(The scene fades out, then fades back in with Ethan and Hyuga walking down a street crowded by people wanting to catch a glimpse of the Maiden. Ahead of them, a suspicious looking character is withdrawn from the crowd)

• Ethan: Hey, Hyuga... Doesn't that guy look kinda shady?
• Hyuga: Yes, he does. I was just thinking the same thing.
• Ethan: Great. Let's approach him slowly.

(As Ethan and Hyuga approach, the man runs off across a bridge)

• Ethan: Damn, he must've seen us!
• Hyuga: I'll go to the other side!

(Karen comms Ethan)

• Karen: The Maiden's boat will be passing by any second.
• Ethan: Great. Hyuga, let's split up. I'm gonna go find that guy!
• Hyuga: Roger!

(End Scene)

(Cutscene) (The Divine Maiden's boat floats gently down the river between the streets of Ohtoku City as throngs of admirers cheer her)

• Crowd: Maiden!!! Divine Maiden!!! Over here!

(Behind the crowd, Ethan stalks the suspect who is pensively pacing and watching the approaching boat. Hyuga approaches Ethan)

• Hyuga: Ethan! Any luck?
• Ethan: Sh! Over there!

(Ethan points to the suspect, and notices he's drawing a firearm)

• Ethan: Oh no!

(Ethan takes off running towards the suspect)

• Hyuga: Hey! Ethan!

(Hyuga comms Karen)

• Hyuga: Karen. Ethan's found the target and is in pursuit!
• Karen: Understood! I'm on my way!

(The Maiden exits her boat and walks along a row of Armed Servants as she waves to the crowds surrounding her. Ethan, panting, continues sprinting towards the suspect who is releasing the safety on his firearm and takes aim at the Maiden)

• Ethan: Stop!

(Ethan tackles the suspect, sending them both sprawling to the ground. In their struggle, Ethan's arm pushes hard against the suspect's face, smearing tearing off part of the false face and revealing a metallic skull)

• Ethan: Huh?

(The mechanical assassin explodes violently, sending Ethan tumbling through the air - his face and chest blackened with burn marks. Hyuga and Karen rush to his side)

• Hyuga: Ethan!
• Karen: Oh no! Ethan!
• Ethan: Ugh...
• Hyuga: The wound's deep... Karen, you're a newman, right? Can't you heal him with a TECHNIC?
• Karen: I... I can't use TECHNICs.

(The Divine Maiden approaches the group)

• Maiden: Excuse me, but I...
• Hyuga: Maiden...
• Maiden: Oh no, he's hurt... I must tend to him...

(The Maiden bends down and places her hand over Ethan's charred body. A green glow emanates and Ethan is healed)

• Maiden: Are you feeling better now?
• Ethan: Ugh... Maiden...
• Maiden: We have to stop meeting like this.
• Ethan: Well, that's twice you've healed me...
• Maiden: But this time, you saved my life, too! Thank you.
• Armed Servant: Maiden! It's too dangerous here! We must leave!
• Maiden: Yes. Well... I hope we meet again.

(The Maiden exits. Ethan waves to her)

• Hyuga: Ethan?! You actually know her?
• Ethan: Well, It's complicated... but yeah! Heh heh heh.
• Hyuga: You better have the best intentions... or you'll regret it.
• Ethan: Why, Hyuga... I believe you're jealous!
• Hyuga: D-Don't be ridiculous!
• Karen: Ethan, I've heard of lying down on the job but...
• Voice: Karen? Karen, is that you?!

(A buxom blonde newman woman enters)

• Maya: Yeah, it is you! Karen!!!
• Karen: Maya?!

(Maya rushes over to Karen excitedly)

• Maya: When did you get back?! And why didn't you even tell me, your sister?
• Ethan: Sister?
• Hyuga: Heh... You couldn't tell from looking.
• Ethan: She's pretty, though..
• Maya: You could at least call. And you better not say no to dinner... You're so secretive...
• Karen: Didn't have time. I'm here on business.
• Maya: All work and no play makes Karen a dull girl!
• Ethan: I've never seen Karen act like that...
• Hyuga: I know what you mean.
• Maya: You guys work with Karen, right?

(Ethan and Hyuga stand excitedly)

• Ethan: Yeah!
• Maya: What do you say we all go to my place?
• Ethan: Oh, you don't have to twist my arm!
• Hyuga: It would be my pleasure.

(End Scene)

Ohtoku Guardian's Branch

(Scene: Ethan, Hyuga, Karen, Maya)

• Ethan: You two don't look anything alike, do you?
• Maya: You're right, genius. We aren't related by blood.
• Karen: When I was a child I was found in Mizuraki Forest, all alone.
• Ethan: Why were you...
• Karen: I don't know. I was running away from something or someone with my mother. But my mother...
• Maya: Let's change the subject, shall we? This is a difficult subject for Karen.
• Ethan: Oh, right. I'm terribly sorry.
• Karen: No, don't worry about it. I'm okay.
• Hyuga: So... weren't we going to Maya's house? Why are we at the GUARDIANS Ohtoku City branch?
• Maya: Oh, that's right. I forgot to tell you. The truth of the matter is, I'm a member of the GUARDIANS too! I'm renting this room as a place to do research. It's a bit messy inside... Just ignore the smell!

(End Scene)

Maya's Libratory

(Cutscene) (The group sits around a table in Maya's lab. Various computer monitors and lab equipment lay scattered about)

• Hyuga: So, you say you're a scientist, huh?
• Maya: Yeah, in GUARDIANS Research & Development. But it gets so boring sitting in a lab all day. I'm so jealous of Karen!
• Karen: "Oh, I wish I was smart like Karen and exciting like Karen..."
• Maya: Oh come on, don't make fun... I'm being serious. All my colleagues say my inventions are off the wall. Ahahahaha!! Oh, that reminds me. I'm developing a new kind of army ration. You gotta try it!

(Maya stands up and retrieves a plate full of brownish unappetizing nutritional bars)

• Maya: Karen, you first!
• Karen: Uh... You know I'm sure it tastes great but...
• Maya: Oh, I see. Alright then, you two! Don't be afraid! Eat up!
• Ethan: Cool! I'm starving!
• Hyuga: I... is this really food?
• Maya: Of course. I was given the task of creating a new ration that would last 100 years. Yeah... the problem is, all the races have different taste buds. It's hard to please everyone. You're the first humans to try it, so I want you to be very truthful, okay?

(As Maya talks, Ethan and Hyuga choke and gag on the horrible tasting "food")

• Maya: Well, how is it?
• Ethan & Hyuga: G-Great...
• Maya: Really? What a relief! I made all kinds of different flavors! Here!
• Ethan & Hyuga: Uuuh?!

(A call comes in on Karen's comm. She answers)

• Karen: Yes!
• Nav: Karen, it's an emergency!
• Karen: Yes, what's wrong?!
• Nav: The Maiden's shuttle has crashed in the Mizuraki district.
• Karen: What was that?!
• Nav: The area already shows signs of SEED contamination and altered wildlife. Go in and get her out of there.
• Karen: Yes sir!

(Karen stands)

• Karen: There's been an accident. The Maiden's shuttle crashed.
• Ethan: Crashed?!
• Karen: Yes, we need to leave now!
• Hyuga: Is... is the Maiden alright?!
• Karen: They don't know. But that's what we're going to find out.
• Ethan: What are we standing around here for?!
• Maya: I'll go, too!
• Karen: No, it's too dangerous.
• Maya: You'll have to take a shuttle. And it'll be awhile before you can take off. But, if I call in a few favors. I can get us out of here in no time.
• Karen: Okay. Fine. Then come along.
• Ethan: Karen!
• Maya: Aw, don't worry about me! You're not the only ones who have gone through Guardians combat training!

(End Cutscene)

(Scene: Ethan, Hyuga, Karen, Maya)

• Maya: Well then, I'll run through the formal procedures. The rest of you get ready and meet up at the Flyer Base.
• Ethan: Understood.

(Mission "Rescue the Maiden" available)

• Maya: Oh right, let's exchange partner cards.

(Receive Maya Shidow's partner card)

• Maya: Well then, you are dismissed! Hehehe! I always wanted to say that!
• Karen: I'm getting worried...
• Ethan: I'm sure it will be all right.

(End Scene)

Ohtoku City Guardians Branch

(Lou)

• Lou: You made quite a display.
• Ethan: You saw that?
• Lou: It is foolish to place your life in such dangerous situations when you don't have interchangeable parts.
• Ethan: You wouldn't understand!

(Again)

• Lou: Why did you join the GUARDIANS?
• Ethan: Because I found out how great it feels to help people out. What about you?
• Lou: I have never thought about it. From the point I first became conscious, I have always been a Guardian.

(Reyna)

• Reyna: Welcome to the Ohtoku City branch of the GUARDIANS! Protecting the future of the Gurhal System. I am Reyna.
• Ethan: Nice to meet you. I'm Ethan Waber.
• Reyna: Waber. What a great name!
• Ethan: Reyna... What kind of person is Maya?
• Reyna: Maya is a very kind person. But sometimes she gives me these snacks...
• Ethan: Hahaha! She gave me some of those things, too!
• Reyna: A little while ago, Maya requested shuttle clearance.
• Ethan: Ah, she's accompanying us.
• Reyna: To rescue the Maiden, right? Good luck! I pray that the Holy Light protects you.

(Talk to Karen)

• Karen: Is Maya going to be all right?
• Ethan: She'll be fine. I'll be watching her back.
• Karen: That's why I'm worried.
• Ethan: Hey! What do you mean by that? Well, anyway, we've got to get to the Divine Maiden as soon as possible!
• Karen: Yes, we do.

(Add Karen to Party)

• Karen: All right. Let's go help the Divine Maiden!

(Remove Karen from Party)

• Karen: Quit wasting time, Ethan! If we mess this up, we won't get a second chance.

Ohtoku City: Central District

(Pavilion of Air Guard)

• Pavilion of Air Guard: What are you doing lurking around here like this? This area is under special surveillance on account of the Divine Maiden's visit. We certainly won't allow any questionable behavior today!

(Again)

• Pavilion of Air Guard: We will not allow any questionable behavior today. Move along!

Ohtoku City:Clothing Shop

(Talk to Hyuga)

• Hyuga: I'm terribly worried about the Divine Maiden! Mizuraki C.D. is a very dangerous place. Why did they even pass through there?
• Ethan: Maybe it's a conspiracy!
• Hyuga: Well, that's just redicu... Do you really think so?
• Ethan: Let's just get ready, okay?
• Hyuga: Yes. All right, lets.

(Add Hyuga to the Party)

• Hyuga: There's no time to lose! Let's go help the Maiden!

(Remove Hyuga from the Party)

• Hyuga: What's the hold up, Ethan? If we don't go soon, the Divine Maiden... she...

Yohmei Shop

(Talk to Maya)

• Maya: It's been so long since I've seen real fighting. I hope I haven't forgotten how!
• Ethan: R-Really?
• Maya: Watch my back! Okay, Ethan?
• Ethan: Okay. (Now I'm worried.)

(Add Maya to Party)

• Maya: Well then, I'll be waiting at the Flyer Base.

(Remove Maya from Party)

• Maya: Huh? Still not ready yet? To save the Divine Maiden, you're going to need Karen, Hyuga, AND my help.

(Start mission: Rescue the Maiden)
