Techniques (sometimes referred to as "Technics") are the manifestation of the catalytic reaction between an individual's psychic abilities and photon energy. They can only be cast by Forces, and one must have an appropriate weapon equipped (either a Wand or Rod) in order to be able to cast a Technique. Each weapon has a set number of slots used to equip techniques. The Wand offers two slots while the Rod has four. Technique disks, which can be purchased in stores around Gurhal, are used to learn a base lv.1 Technique. From there, as a Force uses a Technique in battle, the level of that Technique will increase along with its power, range and other attributes.

Techniques are essentially PSU's equivalent of magic. It should be noted however, that Techniques and magic have appeared together in the original Phantasy Star games and are thus not the same. Techniques are mental or psychic abilities, whereas magic is generally more spiritual, tapping into external forces (in most universes, mana).

Technique Elements

There are six Elements that techniques are based on: Fire, Ice, Thunder, Earth, Light and Dark. Respectively, the six technique family names for these elements are Foie, Barta, Zonde, Deega, Grants and Megid. The names Grants and Megid are currently assumptions, going by previous Phantasy Star titles, as well as context clues within this game, such as the Synthesis Materials Graphoton and Megiphoton. It should be noted that in games previous to Phantasy Star Online Grants has also been translated as Grantz, and Megid has been translated as Megiddo, and the official localized names of these Techniques are not yet known. The only Light-based Techniques that have been identified thus far are the healing Techniques Resta and Regene, the latter of which was previously known as Anti.

Foie, Barta, Zonde and Deega all have a 'base' form as well as Gi- and Ra- forms, which are eventually weaker, but can more easily hit multiple targets simultaneously. There even seem to be additional Techniques that do not go by this naming pattern of prefixing their members, such as Damufoie and Nosuzonde. It is currently unknown if the Damu and Nosu prefixes will carry over to the other Techniques or if they are exclusive to one type, although the former seems more likely.

Not counting the Light techniques Resta and Regene, there are other Support Techniques that can increase an ally's attack power or defense as well as weaken an enemy's attacks and defensive power. The current assumed names for these techniques are Shifta, Deband, Jellen and Zalure, however no information to confirm these names has been released at this time.
