One of the four PSU player-races, Newmans are generally seen as being adept in [[Techniques]], as a
result of the increased mental abilities of this race due to genetic engineering. However they are the least physically imposing race. [[Karen Erra]], one of the [[Story Mode]]'s prominent Newmans, cannot use Techniques, however.

== Visuals ==
Visually, Newmans are very similar to humans. The only notable difference is that Newmans have elongated ears which can be raised three different ways within a 90-degree radius.

Beasts are one of the four playable races available in Phantasy Star Universe. A genetically engineered race, they exhibit high physical strength and endurance; meaning they are suited for physical labor. Their weaknesses are their low mental abilities and accuracy.

Visually, Beasts appear similar to [[Humans]] and [[Newmans]]. Their main distinction is their faces, which appear slightly similar to that of an animal; unsurprising given their animalistic nature. Beasts have short noses with round ends, slight harelips, and animal ears, which come in four styles. These styles range from slightly furry to full blown cat ears, which follow the color of their hair.

One of the four playable races in Phantasy Star Universe, Humans are the 'original' race in the [[Gurhal Star System]] and the creators of the other races - the [[Newman|Newmans]] (in an attempt to make a mentally proficient super-race), [[Beast|Beasts]] (engineered for physical labour) and the [[Cast|Casts]] (created to serve Humans). These races were originally oppressed or enslaved by Humans, but now Humans co-exist as equals with the other races. Humans are known for being Jacks of all trades, but masters of none.

Gameplay

Game play wise, Phantasy Star Universe plays very much like its predecessor Phantasy Star Online.

=Combat=
Combat features two basic commands for encounters.

These are:
*Attack - Your character uses their weapon to attack a foe or foes (depending on your weapon). With timing you can use the three variations of attack to perform what is known as a Combo, which are only possible now with Melee weapons. The advantages to performing combos is chaining the attacks in rapid succession which gives greater damage over time and different variances/angles to most follow-up swings.

*Photon Arts - Rangers have a PA called "Bullet." "Bullets" simply adds elemental damage to your Attack. Forces have "Technics" which allows them to cast magic spells, depending on technic(s) attached to the Staff or Wand. Hunters use the PA called "Skill." These skills are a special attacks that inflict more damage to enemies. "Technics" and "Skills" require the immediate use of Photon Points (PP), similar the the TP gauge in PSO or "magic bar" in other games. Guns use PP for attacking normally (Acts like an ammo guage), so "Bullets" simply drain more PP per shot.

==Techniques==
Techniques are in essence Phantasy Star Universe’s ‘magic’. Each [[Technique]] has an associated [[Element]] and comes in a variety of uses. Among them are ‘Nukes’ such as Foie (Fire attribute Attack), Barta (Ice attribute attack) and etc. However, unlike physical attacks they cannot be chained and they cannot strike critical hits.
